Week of April 6-12, 2020

HUMILITY

Our sermon series is about HUMILITY!

“The Way”

  • Bible Story: The Way (Jesus Prays in Gethsemane) • Matthew 26:36-56 (Supporting: Luke 22:39-46)

  • Bottom Line: Put others first.

  • Memory Verse: Don’t do anything only to get ahead. Don’t do it because you are proud. Instead, be humble. Value others more than yourselves. Philippians 2:3 (NIrV)

  • Life App: Humility—Putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve

  • Basic Truth: I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

APRIL 9th ACTIVITIES:

This week we learned about Humility and Jesus example. We have just a few activities for you.

ACTIVITY #1 : WHO CAN I PUT FIRST

WHAT YOU NEED:

Index cards; crayons or markers

WHAT YOU DO:

As you give each child a card, lead kids to think of someone they can put first this week. Set out the markers, and guide kids to draw the person they chose. Instruct kids to set their cards in front of them, and then use the conversation below as a guide to lead kids into prayer.

WHAT YOU SAY:

“We live in a world that’s all about putting ourselves first: WE want to win the game, WE want to choose the movie, WE want to play the game OUR way, and WE want to be first. But God wants us to think and act differently. He wants us to put others first. “Who did you choose to put first this week? (Pause.)

[Make It Personal] (Tell kids someone you’ll put first this week, too.) Like Philippians 2:3 says: Don’t do anything only to get ahead. Don’t do it because you are proud. Instead, be humble. Value OTHERS more than yourselves (NIrV; emphasis added).

Activity #2: PHILIPPIANS 2:3

WHAT YOU NEED:

Bibles, markers, paper

WHAT YOU DO:

Hand out Bibles. Assist in finding Philippians 2:3 in their Bibles, using the tips below..

(Hold up a Bible opened to the table of contents to show the kids what the page looks like.) When the kids find the table of contents, lead them to find Philippians in the list under “New Testament.” When the kids find Philippians, lead them to look at the page number beside the word. Explain that the number tells them on what page they can find Philippians. Help the kids find the page. When they find Philippians, explain that the big numbers on the page are the chapter numbers. Help them find chapter 2. Explain that the small numbers are verse numbers. Help them find verse 3 in chapter 2.

When everyone has found the verse, read it aloud by asking the kids to repeat it after you as they follow along in their Bibles.• Distribute paper and markers.• Working together ask your child  to choose two words they feel are the most important in Philippians 2:3.Instruct kids to write one word on the top of their page and the other in the middle.• When finished, take turns letting partners share the words they chose and why they are important to the meaning of the verse. HEAR FROM GOD MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY

Don’t do anything only to get ahead. Don’t do it because you are proud. Instead, be humble. Value OTHERS more than yourselves

Activity #3: DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

WHAT YOU NEED:

No supplies needed

WHAT YOU DO:

  1. How have you put someone first recently?
  2. Why are certain people easier to put first than others?
  3. Without naming names, who is easier? Who is harder?
  4. Our world is often “all about me,” so how can you live the upside-down, others-first, life instead?
  5. How can you put others first this week?
  6. Who is someone specific you can put first and how are you going to do it?

Activity #4: Make handprints, as many as you want, and on each one of them write something you are thankful for!

Hang them up and post a picture ☺ Use #flcfamilyriseup
